Question:
Why is our Assyrian Church of the East being attacked today, and how critical it is for us Assyrians to maintain the strength of our Assyrian Church of the East?
Answer:
The Assyrian Church of the East represents the stronghold guarding the faith and national name. This Mother Church which can without doubt be considered the national Church of all Assyrians has had a long history not only amongst its own people but also with other peoples which it came in contact with over the centuries.
During its long history, the Church of the East witnessed the rise of some of its prelates who not only represented the Christian faith which the Assyrians embraced but few of them had a prominent role nationally such as the martyr Mar Benyamin Shimun who was murdered along with dozens of Assyrians in a treacherous plot at the hands of a Kurdish Agha Simko on March 03rd, 1918.
This brief introduction helps to clarify why today the Assyrian Church of the East is being attacked because it rejected the unfair compromise to denounce the Assyrian name in favor of names which don’t denote the long, proud and history of martyrdom that the Church of the East represents, and that’s why it’s been known as the Church of Martyrs.
In these difficult times of the Assyrian nation’s history, the Church of the East is proudly carrying the Assyrian name, which many want to obliterate. Therefore, if the Church of the East was in the past the promulgator and protector of faith even in the darkest of times, then it’s the duty of all loyal Assyrians to support their Church at these crucial times because it’s that institution which will continue to gather its sons/daughters. It’s understood that no one is perfect and to err is human but keeping the faith is important as well.
