The Russian newspaper the Kommersant reported in its issue today about the protest which was held simultaneously by the Assyrians of Moscow and Tbilisi, the newspaper added that the Assyrians of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Tataristan, and Kaliningrad held a protest in front of the Georgian embassy in Moscow.

The protest was against the arrest of Boris Ivanov, a former Assyrian general in the Ministry of the Interior in the Republic of Georgia. The newspaper reported that the protesters delivered a letter to the embassy officials to be handed to the President of Georgia. Assyrian flag and banners were raised demanding the release of the Assyrian General who has diabetes and is a father of two little girls.

The former General Boris Ivanov who was a famous figure in the Georgian Ministry of Interior was arrested on the 07th of July, 2006 while he was on a visit from Moscow to see his blind and ill father who resides in Georgia. The Georgian security forces raided the house and arrested him without a legal warrant and in the absence of any legal or judiciary presence. It has become a customary practice for the Georgian security forces to fabricate charges by planting drugs when they raid a house to arrest an individual.

The reason given for the raid was that a telephone call was made from both the home and the mobile phone to the leaders of the protesters against the Georgian regime in the city of Kodorovi. According to the news agencies, Boris (Boria) Ivanov had explained that the phone call did take place but it was one of his guests who made it and he’s not in the habit of asking his guests about their phone calls.

The Russian radio and television, as well as the Georgia radio and television, the Rosbalt news agency, the Kommersant newspaper and many independent photographers and freelance journalists were present to cover the protest where the Assyrian protesters held the Assyrian flags with banners and pictures of the former General Ivanov in prison.
